Why Networking Matters More Than Your CV: 2-Min Read

Why Networking Matters More Than Your CV

Have you ever sent out dozens of job applications only to be met with radio silence? It’s frustrating, disheartening and, unfortunately, all too common. But here’s the thing – your CV, no matter how polished, might not be enough on its own. In today’s Basel job market, networking is the game-changer you can’t afford to ignore.

The Power of Networking: The 9x Factor

Let’s start with a fact that might surprise you: you’re 9 times more likely to get a new job through your network than through a cold application. That’s a huge difference! While a CV is important for showcasing your skills and experience, your connections often get you through the door.

Think Back to Your Previous Roles

Take a moment and think back to your last few roles. How many of them did you secure through a cold application? Now, how many came about because someone you knew recommended you or because you connected with the right person at the right time? For most of us, networking has played a significant role in landing those key opportunities.

On a personal level, all my employment opportunities, apart from my first graduate position (and the supermarket job at 16 – a hand-written application!), came from people who already knew me.

This isn’t just a coincidence. Networking works because it builds relationships based on trust. When someone in your network vouches for you, it’s a powerful endorsement that no bullet point on your CV can match. Employers are more likely to consider a candidate with a personal recommendation.

Why Networking Works

So, why is networking so effective? It comes down to human nature. People like to hire those they know, or at least those recommended by someone they trust, either indirectly or directly. It’s a way to reduce risk – hiring is always a bit of a gamble, but if a candidate comes through a trusted source, that gamble feels much safer. Hiring managers in tough environments can always play the Get Out Of Jail card, “Well, X told me they were great,” etc.

Networking also gives you access to the Basel Hidden Job Market. Many positions are filled before being advertised simply because someone knew someone perfect for the job. If you’re not networking, you miss out on these opportunities entirely.

Hidden Basel. Why Networking Matters

Don’t Let Your CV Do All the Work

While relying solely on your CV is tempting, especially if you’ve spent hours perfecting it, remember it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Your CV might get you noticed, but your network is what gets you hired. This is especially true in competitive job markets like Basel’s, where standing out is more challenging than ever.

How to Build Your Network

Building a solid professional network takes time but is worth the investment. Start by attending industry events, joining professional groups on LinkedIn and reaching out to people in your field. Don’t be afraid to make the first move – most people are happy to connect and share advice.

Here’s an example: Six months ago, I wanted to explore the Digital Transformation market for my other business, Hire Collider. To do that, I used LinkedIn to connect with as many C-level leaders in the space as possible. The result? Out of 500 invitations to connect, 50% accepted without knowing me or having spoken to me or anyone in common. Many more connected later when they asked me for clarification. That’s over 250 new C-Level connections and I wasn’t even operating in the field!

If you’re unsure where to start, or if the idea of networking feels daunting, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Networking will set you apart, open doors, and, ultimately, land you the job. So next time you’re stuck, remember it’s not just about what you know, but who you know.
